A Website Crisis: Overcoming Speed Bumps and Technical Glitches Without Starting Over

This is kind of how I felt when I realized my website was having issues and wasn't sure what to do. Thankfully the problems were resolved. Sigh of relief, I'm so grateful I don't have to start over again from scratch!

Hey everyone! I’ve been a bit quiet on here lately, and I’d like to explain. I’ve been on a mission to speed up my website because slow-loading pages aren’t anyone’s cup of tea. As some of you may know, search engines favour fast-loading sites.

In my enthusiasm, I added a database cleaning plugin, thinking it would be a game-changer only to question my decision. But it turns out, it wasn’t the root of my problems. The real issues were lurking right on the homepage, disguised as simple features.

I got rid of the plugin and some unnecessary themes, which seemed promising at first. Diving into the page editor revealed the page looking as it should, hinting I was on the right track. However, the live preview told a different story.

The culprits? My Instagram feed, a cookie notice plugin, a carousel blog post element and a mix-up with WordPress themes. They were clashing and causing chaos, especially on the homepage. I’m imagining website elements getting into a huge argument as I write this, but I digress.

I was battling these issues while feeling under the weather, which didn’t help. But eventually, the problems resolved, and the site started running smoothly again.

I’m relieved I don’t have to rebuild everything from scratch. There’s still work to be done, like removing unnecessary sidebars, adding post excerpts, and ensuring the layout looks good. Surprisingly, sidebars decided to show up uninvited on my posts.

I’m excited to get back to regular posting, starting with sharing this ordeal with you all. Thanks for your patience and support – it means a lot!
